It was late, and darkness had fallen when Dylan saw the text from Brody telling him where to go.

Scipio at night didn’t look like most cities. There were no sparkling clusters of lights that appeared like bright stars in the inky black of space, no colorful store signs announcing they were still open . . . no people.

The city was predominantly older residents, and it shut down around nine o’clock. Even the bars closed at ten or eleven.

Dylan grabbed a glass of beer at one while he still could. He watched the bartender, a surly man with a red cap and dirty jeans, share a couple of shots with a group at the end of the bar. Dylan drank only half the glass and then left a ten before heading out.

Lily pulled up to the house across the street from the bar just as he crossed over to it. He waited for her on the sidewalk and said, “Sorry, I know it’s late. But I figured you’d want to be here.”

“I do,” she said, setting her car alarm and not looking at him.

“You sure? I know you had a thing planned with Jake. I wasn’t going to—”

“It’s fine, Dylan. Let’s see what she has to say.”

The house was square and beige with a yellowed lawn in front. Patricia Iden answered the door and told them Leena was gone before trying to slam the door on them. Dylan put his foot against the jamb.

“Move your damn foot!” Patricia yelped.

“I need to talk to your daughter for like thirty seconds.”

Patricia grunted as she pushed the door, almost slamming Dylan’s fingers. “She don’t want to talk to nobody.”

With a final push of her somewhat prodigious weight, she slammed the door closed. Dylan had to move his foot and fingers so they wouldn’t get crushed.

“Just thirty seconds,” Dylan shouted. “I’m Arlo’s lawyer. He wants to take responsibility, and they’re going to kill him for it. Do you hear me? He’s going to die, and I’m trying to save his life. To save the life of your granddaughter’s father.”

There was no sound coming from inside the apartment. Lily watched quietly as Dylan said, “If saving his life isn’t even important enough for you guys to open a damn door, then he’s already dead.”

As they turned to leave, he heard the door unlock.
